Isaiah 62: 6 says "I have set watchmen on your walls O Jerusalem; they shall never hold their peace day and night". God has placed watchmen in the church whose calling is to be spiritual watchmen for the people of God. We watch in three ways:
UPWARDLY
We watch in the heavenlies to hear what God is saying, and to catch the wind of the Spirit. We are then able to pray into what we hear, and alert the church to the prophetic direction that God gives.
OUTWARDLY
We watch what is happening in the world, current events, trends, what is happening in the nations. This gives us a focus to pray into and to seek God's direction, both for ourselves and for the church. We become like the Sons of Issachar (1 Chronicles 12:32) in understanding the times and the seasons and being able to tell the church what to do.
INWARDLY
We watch to see what is happening in the church, the wider body of Christ.. We watch over the places and events where God is gathering His people, and pray into them. We watch over the church to pray into areas where there is danger, or conflict, or where God is showing us there needs to be change. We are zealous to see the Bride of Christ brought to that place of maturity and perfection that Jesus promises will happen before He returns.
As Watchmen that God has set on the walls, we cry out to God day and night, seeking justice and righteousness, and praying into specific areas that God highlights. What we see as we watch is often prophetic in nature, as God downloads his plans and purposes for establishing and advancing his Kingdom. Watchmen are never off-duty and we continue to watch even when we are not in the prayer room. Being a Watchman brings together the prophetic with the intercessory as we partner together with God to pull down his Kingdom from the heavenlies to the earth.
